Sadly, beautiful fresh-cut flowers can't last forever (wouldn't that be a dream). However, there are a few tips and tricks that you can implement, to help get the most life out of your beautiful blooms! The more care that you give your flowers, the longer they will last. Some stems are more delicate and have a shorter vase-life than other heartier flowers, but typically your arrangements should last about a week, and sometimes more when properly cared for!
With fresh clean water! If you wouldn't drink old, bacteria-filled water, don't make your flowers drink it either! Make sure your gather your flowers, pour out the old water, rinse out your vase and replace with fresh water every 48 hours. While you are changing the water, take a moment to snip about a half an inch off the bottom of all of your stems, with clean sharp scissors. This ensures that you avoid any oxidations of the stems and that their straw-like properties are functioning clearly, without bacterial growth, and as they should to help your blooms receive the water and nutrients they need!
Speaking of nutrients, don't toss that little packet of flower food that I include! Sprinkle just a bit of that food into the vase with each fresh water change. Accidently already tossed it, or ran out? Don't worry! You can add two teaspoons of sugar per quart of water as well.
Unless you plan to sit and admire your blooms through the night (which I mean, I'd understand ;)), clear out a space in your fridge and pop those beauties in there overnight and then pull them back out in the morning. The cold delays most biological processes, which include those of flowers! Just be sure you don't have any fruits next to them in the refrigerator when you go to tuck them in for bed-the ethylene gas that is emitted by many ripening fruits speeds up the maturation of your blooms, and will cause them to wilt and age prematurely. This also means keeping them away from any fruits on your counters or tables when back on display!
